We meet about twice a month. We spend our time in high-energy fellowship and strive to provide a come-as-you-are, safe and welcoming atmosphere where students can gather with fellow Christians, have fun and be nourished in their walk with Christ. We are fully aware that it is difficult to be faithful as a young adult in our culture today, so we work to equip and encourage our students. Our goal in whatever we do — service projects, Bible studies, fellowship events, hanging out — is to relish in our God-given gift of faith and grow together in Christ.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
School’s out for summer!!! That may be true, but our SoulFire youth group is going strong! We have several fun events—most of which came via the recommendation of our students. All of these SoulFire events are offered for our soon-to-be freshman (9th grade) through our graduating seniors.
Chill-Ax at Church – Sunday, June 3 – 6pm-8pm
This will be the start of your last week or two of school. You’ll probably be spending that entire weekend with homework, writing papers, and cramming for final exams. So plan to take a break from the world of academia to come to church for a night to simply chill-ax! We’ll hang out, enjoy some exploding kittens (?!?), watch a movie, shoot the breeze, and maybe even set up a karaoke machine! Come hangout with your SoulFire friends, chill and relax, and eat some unhealthy treats.
Madison Mallards – Friday, June 15 – Meet at church at 6:30pm
Let’s Play Ball… or at least go and watch it. Our summer fun will start at the Duck Pond. Come cheer on the Madison Mallards as they take on the Green Bay Bullfrogs. Cost of a ticket is only $10 and includes a hat. Cost for food is additional and optional. Game time is 7:05pm. Friends are welcome and parent drivers/chaperones are needed.
Atlas Comedy Improv – Friday, June 29 – Meet at church at 7:15pm
We’re going to attend the 8pm show at Atlas Comedy Improv (yes, it is family-friendly). Cost is determined by number of people attending, but should be less than $8 per person. Join your Bethlehem friends and laugh the night away. Friends are welcome. Parent drivers/chaperones will be needed.
Pewit’s Nest – Saturday, July 14 – Time TBD
Spending a Saturday at Devil’s Lake has become an annual summer SoulFire tradition. But…
This year we will tweak it just a bit and head to Pewit’s Nest. We’ll explore the gorge and waterfalls, spend the day hiking in God’s creation and cooling off in the water. We’ll find a place to cookout and we’ll do an outdoor potluck of sorts. This is for SoulFire families; we encourage the entire family to come for this.
2019 National Youth Gathering Meeting – July 15, 2018 – 11:30am
We have had GREAT interest in the 2019 National Youth Gathering in Minneapolis, MN. We have also been able to get a solid jumpstart on our fundraising efforts through the Lenten dinners, Easter breakfast, and the Rent-a-Kid program. Thank you to the congregation for your support thus far.
Our next meeting for interested and potential parent/student attendees will be on Sunday, July 15, at 11:30am. At this time, a non-refundable $150 deposit will be collected to secure your spot on the trip to determine a concrete number of people attending. We will also provide gathering updates and look to plan/recruit for more fundraisers.
The NYG is for all students going into or out of high school the summer of 2019. Again, this is an incredible opportunity for our students to be encouraged in their Lutheran faith and identity and have fun doing it. This event will be a highlight of their high school years and leave memories that could last forever! If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Steve.
Explore Madison – Monday, July 23 – 8:30am-4:30pm
Another new SoulFire tradition has been taking a summer day and trekking to the different fun spots of Madison. There are all sorts of things to see and do right here in our own backyard: The Art Museum, State Capitol Building, Olbrich Gardens, Camp Randall, State Street, Michael’s Frozen Custard, Henry Villas Zoo, Memorial Terrace—who knows where we’ll end up?!? Meet at church at 8:30am and return between 4-4:30pm.
Servants of Christ Conference
An Awesome Pre-College Experience for High School Students at CUW
July 29-30, 2018
Time to party—college style. Well not really, but we will head to Concordia University Wisconsin where students can start thinking and talking about post-high school plans. This two-day getaway will provide students with a quick taste of college life, and be encouraged in whatever vocation (job) God has in mind for them. The goal is to help students wrestle with the “When I grow up…” questions; and also questions about how college education will shape and challenge their faith. Students will also learn about the education required and potential careers in education, church work, medicine, business, computers, and other areas of study.
Students will also receive tips on how to use their high school education to prepare for college and how to choose a college that will work well for them. They will also be able to take part in breakaway sessions that will help them grow in faith. These sessions will include topics such as how Christians relate to science, archeological proof that the Bible is true, and how to engage our culture with the truth of God’s Word and the love of His Gospel. Some of this year’s breakout sessions include: “Dinosaurs,” “Origins: The Great Debate,” “The Bible in Ruins,” and “Why is Ham OK but Homosexuality Wrong?”
A strong showing of our Bethlehem students would be awesome. What a neat chance to be grounded in the grace of baptism and to start thinking about God’s unique and awesome plan for each student. Cost is $25 per student, but Bethlehem will cover the cost for members. Friends are welcome and parent drivers/chaperones are needed. If you are interested, please contact Pastor Steve no later than Tuesday, July 10.
High School Ropes Retreat – August 2-4, 2018
This retreat, held at Great Oaks Camp in Lacon, IL, is great for growing fellowship and community. Our Bethlehem students are busy and spread out among many school districts. This weekend provides opportunity for group building, as well as personal and spiritual growth too! The summer schedules fill up fast, but encourage your student to attend! This is for all going into (or out of) high school as of this summer.
Cost is approximately $100 per person and includes two nights, seven meals, high-rope challenge experience, nighttime nature hike, campfires, zip lining, and two low-rope sessions at camp. (Bethlehem will cover 1/3 the cost for our members.) Friends are welcome to attend but have to pay the full cost. There are also optional activities onsite including an escape room ($14) and paintball ($20). In addition we have non-stop activities such as swimming, fishing, boating, archery, gaga ball, glow-in-the-dark Frisbee, and more! We need 15 students to go! We also need adults to drive/chaperone, (one adult/five students). Please talk with Pastor Steve if your student is interested.
You can also check out the camp by visiting their website: www.greatoakscamp.org.
State Fair – Wednesday, August 8 – Time TBD
Let’s head to the State Fair! Cream puffs and deep fried brownies. Cedar Crest ice-cream and pretzel cones filled with BBQ pork. Not to mention more places to buy cheese curds than you can possibly imagine! Just make sure you take some time to let the food digest before you hit up a tilt-a-whirl or big yellow slide. Cost for a ticket will be around $14, plus additional funds for food, games, etc. If we know in advance that we can plan on more (by June 30) discount costs are available.
Wisconsin Dells – Late August
We will spend a day in a waterpark in Wisconsin Dells during the last week of August. Watch the bulletins and emails from Pastor Steve as we get closer for a specific date and information regarding cost.
